Massive trees await processing in the lot of a timber company on the border of Gunung Palung National Park. This is a legal timber operation, with timber taken from forest concessions nearby and from elsewhere in Kalimantan. Deforestation in Borneo, including both legal and illegal, has risen sharply in the last ten years. The Center for International Forestry Research has recently reported that 70 percent of timber flowing from Indonesia is now illegal, while the WWF has estimated that most lowland forest in Borneo will be gone by 2010.
