A Sumatran elephant (elephas maximus sumatranus, captive) grazes near the elephant center in Way Kambas National Park. Due to widespread conflict between elephants and villagers along the borders of the park, over 50 'problem' elephants have been captured and domesticated under a program run by the park service. Way Kambas, which gained national park status in 1982, remains one of the best places in Indonesia to see wild elephants as well. The park also provide a habitat for Sumatran tigers and rhinos.
