A sulfur miner is enveloped in a cloud of suffocating sulfuric gas. Miners harvest the sulfur near sulfur vents in the crater of Mount Ijen, an active volcano in East Java. A dozen men work in the sulfur pit, constructing vents, breaking up hardened yellow sulfur, and distributing it into baskets to be carried out. Even the hardy miners must hold their breath or scramble for clear air when sulfur clouds blow over them. East Java, Indonesia. Image: Danzer_015311.
