Komodo National Park, encompassing a handful of small islands in eastern Indonesia, was formed in 1982 to protect the Park's most famous inhabitant--the Komodo Dragon. The Komodo dragon is a type of monitor lizard, and is the largest lizard in the world, growing as long as three meters and weighing as much as one hundred kilograms. The dragons are highly endangered, with just 6000 still living in the wild. Largely because of this unique creature, the Park was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991.
