A Russel’s viper (vipera russeli) in Komodo National Park in eastern Indonesia. The Russel’s viper is one of the world’s most dangerous snakes, being both highly poisonous and common in areas human inhabitations. In addition to Russel’s viper, Komodo National Park is home to the famed komodo dragons, which are the largest lizards in the world and can grow as long as 3 meters (10 feet) and weigh as much as 90 kilograms (200 lbs). The dragons are highly endangered, with only between 2500 and 5000 living on a few islands in eastern Indonesia. The Park was formed in 1980 primarily to protect these unique lizards.
