A traditional dagger, or kris, is tied to a man's waist using Sumbanese ikat cloth. Sumba--dry, arid, and poor compared to elsewhere in Indonesia--is characterized by a rich traditional culture, and villages in rural areas are still characterized by high-peaked thatched houses.
